BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CANON-McMILLAN SCHOOL DISTRICT


WHEREAS, school districts in the commonwealth have continued to make steady gains in
academic achievement and create innovative and effective programs and curricula for all public
school students and Pennsylvania has made eight straight years of improvements in student
achievement in math and reading with nearly three quarters of Pennsylvania students on grade
level in reading and more than three quarters of the commonwealth's students on grade level in
math based on the PSSA scores; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania was ranked seventh among states for K-12 student achievement and
ninth overall, according to Quality Counts 2011; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's public schools are credited with a 90% graduation rate for 2009-10; and

WHEREAS, according to a September 2011 PSBA Pennsylvania opinion poll, more than twothirds
of Pennsylvanians are satisfied with the quality of their community schools; and
WHEREAS, a 2011 Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup poll shows that more than half of all Americans
give their local schools A's and B's and the number of Americans giving an "A" to their local
schools is the highest on record; and

WHEREAS, the Canon-McMillan School District continues to maintain and improve its rigorous
academic program with 87.5% of all students advanced or proficient in math and 88.5% of all
students advanced or proficient in reading as measured by the PSSA.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Canon-McMillan School District will Stand Up for
Public Education and work to create a movement among school board members, administrators,
parent/teacher groups, staff, retired teachers, students, taxpayer community, business community leaders, local media, legislators and other local government officials.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Canon-McMillan School District will promote increased
awareness of the great successes of our students, teachers and schools and be proactive in sharing the good news about our community schools and create an atmosphere of pride.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Canon-McMillan School District will invite our local
legislators to our schools to engage in student programs so they can see first-hand the good work that students and staff are accomplishing.
