Reading
Canon-McMillan School District teachers utilize the Scott Foresman Reading series to aide in the teaching of their curriculum. With each main selection, the series offers integrated spelling and grammar, a target skill, and vocabulary. Following the main selection, there is a paired selection which extends the student’s learning and leveled readers which are used to meet the needs of each individual student. In addition to their online textbook, Scott Foresman offers a webquest which can be used in conjunction with each main selection, too.

Math
Canon-McMillan School District fourth grade utilizes the Scott Foresman math series to carry out their curricular goals.  The skills taught include place value and money; number operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; time, data analysis, graphing; geometry and measurement; fraction concepts; decimals; and probability.  Math instruction includes a balance of textbook skill practice and hands-on activities helping students to make connections between abstract concepts and real-world applications.  Fourth grade also supplements the course curriculum with computer activities.

Science

Fourth graders will utilize hands on Science Matters Kits.  The units included in these kits are Electricity and Magnetism and Ecology.  In addition, to Science Matters, McGraw Hill Science is used to reinforce additional curriculum and PSSA concepts.

Social Studies

This year in 4th grade social studies students will explore the US Regions.   Students will also become more aware of Pennsylvania’s geography and history.  Throughout the school year students will be able to navigate through our country as well as our home state by learning various map skills.
