The following
screenings are mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of
Health. These are considered screenings and are not to be
substituted for regular check ups with your physician. The
screenings are performed by the school nurse and assistants.
Height and Weight (BMI)
Checked annually in kindergarten through grade
12.

Vision
Checked annually
in kindergarten through grade 12.
If you have a concern, suspect a visual problem or your child
has an existing visual condition contact your school nurse to
discuss this matter.
If a student does
not pass the visual screening a referral notice will be sent
home.
Hearing
Checked in kindergarten,
1, 2, 3, 7, and 11.
If you have a concern,
suspect a hearing problem or your child has an existing hearing
condition contact your school nurse to discuss this matter.
If a student does
not pass the hearing screening a referral notice will be sent
home.
Scoliosis
Screening is done
in grades 6 and 7.
The 6th grade scoliosis
screening is generally done as part of the required physical
examination. The purpose of the scoliosis screening is to detect
any abnormal curvature of the spine.
If a student does
not pass the scoliosis screening a referral notice will be sent
home.
Physical
Examination
Required for students
upon entering school or 1st grade and in 6th and 11th grade.
You will be notified
when the school physician will be performing the physical examination
at your child's school. Only those students with written parental
permission will be examined by the school physician.
It is recommended
that this exam be performed by your private physician who
is more familiar with your child's medical history. The required
private physical examination form can be obtained from your child's
school nurse or downloaded ( physical
form ). The private examination
may be done within one year from the start of the current
school year. Example: The current school year started September
2006, the exam date can be as early as September 2005. Once
the private examination is completed, return the private
physical form to your school nurse.
Dental Examination
Required of students
in 1st, 3rd, 7th.
You will be notified
when the school dentist will be performing the dental examination
at your child's school. Only those students with written parental
permission will be examined by the school dentist.

What does
a referral mean?
If you receive a
referral form after any school screening or examination, it means
that the screening or examination detected a possible problem
and further evaluation by a professional health care provider
is recommended. The referral form is to be completed by your
private health care provider and returned to the school nurse.
