The Olweus Bully Prevention Program Kicks Off With A BMX Stunt Show

Mr. Paterson and Mr. Barzan are jumped by one of the riders.

Our school cares about the safety and well-being of our students. We want to make sure our school is a good place for students to learn. To do this we are going to be using a program called the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is one of the best-known bullying prevention programs.  OBPP has been proven to prevent or reduce bullying. The goals of OBPP are to reduce bullying problems and prevent new bullying problems from happening. The program also works to make relationships better among students. The program is for all students, not just those who are being bullied or who are bullying others.

Cecil and North Strabane Township Detectives Visit CIS

North Strabane's Detective Wybranowski and Cecil's Detective Marcucci took time from their busy schedules today to visit with our sixth grade teams who are reading The Westing Game. Mrs. Rader's and Mrs. McIlvaine's Language Arts classes went to the cafeteria to hear the detectives tell about their jobs and how they work to find clues that will help them to solve mysteries. Each detective told how reading and writing are integral parts of their jobs. We learned some terms that are important to know when reading and solving mysteries, such as alibi, clue, crime, detective, evidence, red herring, suspect, victim, and witness.

Cecil Intermediate School Remembers 9-11

Cloudy skies parted and the sun filtered through as the students of Cecil Intermediate School were drummed to the field by Zach Hrip.  Silently, each wearing a yellow “WE REMEMBER 9-11” ribbon, they filled in around an area housing the 9-11 date and a huge yellow ribbon signed with messages of remembrance and hope.  Planes quietly flew overhead as Principal Scott Chambers, conducted a ceremony honoring the lives of those lost and those forever changed on 9/11/01.

Chimes sounded as each event in New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shankesville, Pennsylvania was described followed by a moment of silence.   Also honored were all of the brave people, many of whom lost their lives as they ran to the aid of those in harm’s way,   A poem titled “We Remember” was shared by Mr. Barzan,  a heartfelt song “A Long Journey to Heal”, selected by Mrs. Cheri McIlvaine.  At the conclusion of the ceremony students were challenged to embrace the spirit of service that marks this day.  A picture of the entire school community was then taken.

The ceremony was the culmination of information sharing and activities in the classrooms.  Teachers told of their activities on that day in 2001.  Students reflected after viewing videos of the events.  They discussed and wrote about patriotism, made 9-11 quilts, created displays of thoughts and feelings. Yellow ribbon banners were displayed  at each door.  Most importantly, they shared a spirit of togetherness and community as they contemplated those tragic events and looked to the future inspired to be good citizens of our nation.
