National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform Conference: CMS was recognized June 28, 2014 in Washington D.C. for achieving their Schools to Watch Re-Designation I.

Canonsburg Middle School Re-Designation Celebration: On April 25, 2014, Canonsburg Middle School Faculty, Staff, Students, and Parents celebrated their 2014 re-designation as a Schools to Watch Middle School. A number of public officials were in attendance to recognize the school for its accomplishment. Read more here.

Pennsylvania Middle Level Association Conference: CMS was recently recognized as one of only 29 schools in the state to share the PA Don Eichhorn Schools to Watch designation at the annual PAMLE Conference. Mr. Schrag, Assistant Princpal, Ms. Cashell, Social Studies, and Ms. Paddick, English, represented CMS at the conference. While also at the conference, the trio also presented to other educators across the state on Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. Read more about the designation here.

McDonald's MAC Grants: Mr. and Mrs. Wolf were the proud recipients of two McDonald's MAC Grants totally nearly a $1,000 to support lessons in literacy and science throughout the school year. A special thanks to our Canonsburg McDonalds and McDonalds Inc. for supporting Canonsburg Middle School and public education through such wonderful grant opportunites.

CM Breaking Stereotypes: Old fashioned stereotypes are being shattered at CM with students having a variety of opportunities to explore strengths and interests. Math Counts: Congratulations to the CMS Math Counts Team who came in second place at the recent Math Counts competition held at Washington & Jefferson College. Math Counts is a math enrichment club sponsored by Mr. Clonan, CMS Math Teacher.

Spelling Bee Winner: Congratulations to 8th grader, Natalie for winning the Western Pennsylvania Spelling Bee Competition. Natalie will now go onto compete at the Nationals later this year!

MAC Grant: Mrs. Amy Barbarino, CMS Library Media Specialist, recently received a $500 Mac Grant from McDonald's. The grant money will be used to purchase an iPad for students to use for a variety of projects, such as video book trailers andcreating QR codes for book. CMS would like to thank Mr. Galiano and McDonalds for supporting our academic programming!

Video of the Day: Ms. Paddick’s production has been selected as “Video of the Day” by SchoolTube.com. SchoolTube, Inc. announced that a video contributed by Ms. Paddick, teacher of Canonsburg Middle School is to be featured as SchoolTube’s Video of the Day. Their video titled “"Stop Putting Me Down" CMS Anti-Bullying Sing-off” will be presented as such on August 28, 2012.


“Thousands of videos are uploaded to our site everyday” said Jeff Johnston, SchoolTube’s Community Director.  “Our ‘Video of the Day’ selections are the crème of the crop from the most innovative students and teachers.“

Ms. Paddick’s production will be distributed via Twitter by @SchoolTube, posted on facebook.com/SchoolTube and featured on SchoolTube.com with a network that reaches over 300,000 people each day. Be sure to follow @SchoolTube or #STvotd to watch on Tuesday!

State Representative Visit: Representatives Jesse While and Brandon Neuman visited CMS in May 4th to present an official citation at the school to Dr. Taranto for his 2012 designation of Middle School Principal of the Year.

Pittsburgh Pirates Jackie Robinson Poetry Contest: Congratulations to Rylee K. on the Titans for winning FIRST place out of 2,700 middle school applicants. Rylee will be recognized at the April 20th Pirate Game. Way to go Rylee!

Carson Scholar Award: Congratulations to Kate D. on the Supernovas for receiving the Carson Scholar Award. Kate was recognized as an exemplary student and role model.

Science Grant: Mrs. Laural Ziemba, Director of Community Relations was at CMS to present a $7,000 check to the CMS Science Department. The money will be used to offset the costs of a new STEM Project-Based Learning Science Project. We'll have more information to share once the project is underway...

Geography Bee: The 7th and 8th Grade Geography Bee was held the week of January 9, 2012 here at CMS.  The event is sponsored by Mr. Manion, Seventh Grade Social Studies. Students from all six 7th and 8th grade academic teams competed for the title of Geography Bee champion by attempting to answer a wide variety of questions relating to both U.S, and world, geography.  After a hard fought battle, 7th grader Andrew of the Titans was able claim the title outlasting 8th grader Arjun of the Hurricanes. Beginning next week, Andrew will be taking the qualifying test for the national geography bee held by National Geographic. Good luck Andrew!

Coaches vs. Cancer: Canonsburg Middle School will be participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising program. On December 22nd, the four homebases that have collected the most money will participate in a basketball tournament in front of the entire school. Mr. Faith, Mr. Dominick, and Mr. Manion are spearheading the event for the school.

Giving Back: Josh M. was recognized recently by Senator Solobay with a Certificate of Recognition for Josh's contributions to the community through his community service. On behalf of Senator Solobay, Dr. Taranto presented Josh with the certificate. Joining Josh was his Supernova Team teachers, Mrs. Porter, Mr. Faith, and Mr. Wolf as well as Josh's mother and grandparents. Way to go Josh!
